In an effort to better the environment, and create a convenient platform to access your documents, many businesses are moving to paperless electronic notifications. As of March 2022 the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services announced they will no longer be mailing paper driver’s licence and licence plate renewal notices In addition, there is no longer a cost associated with Ontario licence plate renewals. You are still required to renew your licence plates prior to the expiry. It is your responsibility to complete the licence and plate renewal process.

 

In Ontario, you are required to renew your driver’s licence every 5 years. It is illegal to drive in Ontario with an expired driver’s licence. Driving with an expired licence can jeopardize your eligibility for insurance coverage in the event of claim. As per your policy wordings, if you are driving unlawfully, your insurance company is not required to pay for damages and your policy could be void.

 

If you have forgotten to renew your driver’s licence, you may still be eligible to renew online. To access the online renewal platform click HERE. If your licence has been expired for 1 – 3 years, a vision test may be required. If your licence has been expired for more than 3 years, you are required to complete additional tests including your G1. This can have a significant impact on your insurance rates and eligibility. Most insurance companies determine your driving record based on years of continuous licence experience. Therefore, if you have to redo your G1, G2 or G class licence, your driving record will be based on the most recent dates each licence class is obtained. In short, if you are in a position where you have to redo your licence, your insurance premiums will be negatively impacted.
